Boat In The Air
Well spring is finally here and the cover is off the Tsatz. In fact she is in the air! I am plagued with the stock steel Mac trailer. It is still surprisingly solid but rust is creeping in, again. Three years ago I put new springs on, ground it down to metal and primed it. Never got around to the finish coat of paint. Sailing got in the way. Well not this time. Saturday I built a gantry and Sunday I lifted her off. Trailer is now stripped, wire wheeled and ground down to metal. Three step POR15 process under way. The degreasing and etching is done. Now it needs to go into the garage to be heated for the POR15 layer. Easier said than done. Cleaning the garage that is!! Here are a couple pics. I figure I will do the keel as well. I'll post pics throughout the process.

Re: Boat In The Air
Finally got the POR 15 on. Still painting at 12:30 last Friday. Fumes were deadly. All in all I think the coating will outlast the trailer. Looks and feels like grey ceramic. Bullet proof finish. The keel is next. That is coming off tomorrow. Then fuel locker and mast raising system. If any one knows of a V25 stern rail anywhere I am in the market. Think sailing adventure.

The wire ties are temporary. Scavenger hunt was on for the clips. Should have gone to the trailer supply store all along.

Here is the finished trailer. New wiring, lights, bunks and carpet, shiny POR15 coating.

Re: Boat In The Air
Next I pulled the keel for it's new POR15 coating. I noticed a couple rubs on the side of the keel locker. The rusty 700# keels was grinding the sides every time it was raised or lowered. I built a cradle and dropped it onto a dolly. The it was transported to the heated garage to be warmed for the coating. Two coats of POR15 and a this epoxy coat on the trunk wear areas and I think I am good to go. I also epoxied 2- 2"X6" fiberglass strips on each side of the locker to eliminate the rub. Or at least to become sacrificial in case of future rubbing. Easy to replace. I will just have to keep an eye on it.
The cable looks good in fact the hardware was as loose and shiny as the day I it on. I replaced the cable when the keel was out last time and installed a new winch as well. That failure is fodder for another story all together. Saint Pierre here in Worcester made a couple for me three four years ago. One is on board as a spare. Keel should be back in place tonight. Strong talk now but a full day of HVAC work can change that plan.

Ken-
How many gallons of POR15 did it take to do your trailer?

Only 1.5 qts. for two coats. I put two coats on the keel as well and still have a lot left! Goes on real thin. Bullet proof ceramic like finish.

Here's a pic of my homemade fender guides on my original Mac trailer. They help to locate the boat on center of the trailer and prevent the hull from rubbing on a tire if not on center...

Re: Boat In The Air
Great idea. Trailer looks just like mine. Mechanically mine is of course freshly painted. I just primed it and put a finish coat of enamel on it. Boat is on and ready. I now need to build a gas tank locker and new rear mast crutch. Or at least rework it. I can hear crickets on this site!! Thanks for keeping me company. Sue "close" shot of the moon was a classic.

Re: Boat In The Air
The next ordeal in store is to re-wire the motor. The push button starter got stuck closed partially and started to catch fire. I was below and my kids said the motor was smoking. Had I been a shore I could have lost the boat. That was the second switch. OEM wants too much money for a simple switch. Secondly there is no way to disconnect the motor from the battery the way it is wired now...per Johnson diagram. Keyed starter where of is OFF. Stay tuned for pics.
