Cuttyhunk Rendezvous Report

PLACES WE VISITED:
Launched out of Allen Harbor on a sunny, breezy Thursday and headed around the south end of Prudence Island. We sailed under the Mount Hope Bridge and on up into the Sakonnet River. Nan and I looked for Dror and noticed she was on her mooring at Pirate's Cove and tried to hail Jack and Rani but with no luck.

We stayed the night at the southern most refuge known as Third Beach on the west side of the river just before entering Buzzards Bay. It is a "somewhat" protected anchorage with Y'not nearest the shore and yet the rollers still allowed us to swing and bob more than I would like.

We awoke at 5:00am to the sound of a tractor and beach cleaning machine (I will not return to this spot!!!). Friday started as a windy, sunny day and we headed out with a reefed main and a full jib. Luckily the wind god was with us as we were able to sail southeast on the prevailing southwesterly that was consistently howling between 15-20 knots.

As we approached Cuttyhunk, the skies grew suddenly dark and a deluge erupted upon us. Foul weather gear could not keep out the horizontal precipitation as we hurriedly took down sail. We motored the rest of the way into the pond. We accidentally anchored in the unmarked fairway and moved to the back of the pond later in the day once the wind died down. Saturday was a bright, sunny day spent visiting other boats in the fleet and some time at the beach.

Sunday morning broke with one wave of fog after another rolling in over the hills of Cuttyhunk. We found a break in the haze and headed out about 9:00am. Soon thereafter the dense fog rolled in as we kept the horn in hand and the whistle nearby as we sailed back toward the Sakonnet River. Nan did have to use the horn as one power boater got much too close as it seemed he was looking at his instruments and not watching the water. The fog finally cleared and we sailed north up the Sakonnet to Fogland Point, about halfway up the river on the eastern shore. This was a truly pastoral anchorage that provided an extremely quiet night (the club should think about a stay here sometime in the future). Monday we arose to a cloudy start and little to no breeze. The iron genny pushed us all the way to Allen Harbor and we arrived just around noon.

The engine overheating again in the middle of Buzzards Bay on the way to Cuttyhunk

Accidentally anchoring in the fairway and being asked to move during the inclement weather

Spending happy hour on Serenity, getting a tour and having a great time with good friends

Getting a tour of Mildred Rose II, what a beautiful, well restored yacht- she was hit not once but twice while anchored on this rendezvous and the initial collision caused some serious damage

The sadness I felt when I found out that Dan and Linda Lacey were moving to Ohio. I am happy for them and yet NE-TS will be at a loss as they were active, fun-loving and just the kind of people who represent what we do so well!!!! Nan and I will miss you greatly. Lake Erie rendezvous???

Discovering that our house battery was not holding a charge

LESSONS LEARNED:
We have been spending too much time focusing on the work at our cottage and not paying enough attention to Y'not. On the ride home from Allen Harbor Nan made me stop at Lowe's to pick up a pressure washer to clean the decks, West Marine for a handheld VHS and sail tape, and finally Walmart to purchase a new deep cycle marine battery. We spent the next 3 days working on the boat and hopefully we will not incur similar situations.

COMMENTS:
Cuttyhunk is one of our favorite places to visit and is accessible from so many different ports of entry. Fogland Harbor is a well kept secret that would easily hold 10-15 boats in a well protected anchorage that is not crowded at all. Happy hour on two rafted full size yachts is cruising in style!!! Thanks to Karen for the booty bags. Dan and Linda we will think of you often and hopefully you come back to visit.

Great trip report Dan!
Rest assured that we are not dissapearing to Ohio,only "relocating to an outer mooring". We just took posession of our new place yesterday,and all the way to the airport we discussed how to make as many rendesvous as possible,and of course,the Holiday Party! And we won't be casting off lines till next May,so we're still around!
I think a Lake Erie Rendesvous would be excellent. Put- in Bay is a real party location for boaters,but more importantly-there's food! lotsa food! Isn't that what NE-TS is about? Sailing to a destination to eat!

It was great to see all of you. Serenity arrived home in Portsmouth on Friday the 14th. After a couple of days on land, we moved her to the Saco River yesterday (it's a great hurricane hole) in preparation for a sail north starting in a week or so.
